Film Evaluation

Creative Industries Evaluation: Term 01 2011
This film isn’t really a story about anything. It is more like a heap of shot types edited together to make a warm type of film. The film is warm and expresses sunlight as being happy. The audio that I selected to use is a song called Sunlight by the bag raiders. It also helps the feel of the movie be sunny and happy.

Synopsis

A synopsis is a summary given in brief terms that covers the major points of your film. Synopses are usually more in-depth than a mere "summary", and aim to give a fair idea of the topic.

Evaluation of Film Progress

Introduction:
Has your film been edited to engage the audience initially and to establish the tone of the piece?
Yes, as the picture used incorporates dark and warm colours. This creates the feeling of scary which my movie is. The text which I have used is simple and had an outlining colour which also positions the viewers to think it’s a scary movie.

What are you going to do to engage the audience? Describe the sounds, lighting, shot types and effects that fit with the genre of your film and how you will incorporate these at the start of your film.
The sounds that I will put in the movie will be short and sharp to create the feel that something is coming from somewhere. The lighting will obviously be dark and there will be a lot of shadows used within the movie. I will use this type of lighting as in every scary movie there is a lot of dark lighting used to create the mood of scary. It also helps to set the movie, as in scary movies usually have dark lighting which sometimes hide the bad guys faces. This will also be used in my movie as it helps hide people’s appearance until later in the movie. The shadows will be used a lot at the start so the viewers can get the feeling of my scary movie. The shot types that will be used will be lots of close ups on faces, so the expression of the actors can be seen, if they are scared or if they are evil. There will also be wide shots used at some stages so the whole background can be seen and the audience can also get a feel for that and can see where it’s set. The effects that will be used will be cuts and immediately changing into the next scene rather then floating across the screen as it needs to be quick and sharp to get across to the audience it’s a scary movie.

Have you carefully chosen audio to suit the pace of the project?
Describe the audio and the pace

Yes I have chosen the correct audio as the song was called sunlight and the movie that I made was filmed outside in the sunlight. Throughout the movie the sunlight comes up a number of times which suits the movie. The pace is also correct as the mood of the movie is happy with the sun so the music is fairly up tempo.

Describe the pace of your music and the type of shots (close-up, mid, high, etc) that you will be creating to fit with the music
The shot types were just a lot of wide shots to show all the scenery. There were also a few close ups on the sun to show the brightness. This is mainly because the song is called sunlight so I had to get the footage to suit the song.

Have you included credits at the start or end of your film?
What information should be included here?
The only thing I included was a title at the start and by holly king. I probably should have put some credits at the end, but because I was running so far behind I didn’t have time to put any in at the end. The information I should have included should have been, maybe where it was filmed, who it was filmed by, and if there were any people included in the filming, the names of the people who were filmed.

Pace
Is the film edited to appropriately suit the rhythm of the scene? Describe the use of techniques such as selective timing and length of shots (either action or sound)
I tried to make some of the shots in time with the music so it would look more effective. Some of the shots are longer then others to go with the music.

Emotional intention
Have you edited the footage to create heightened expression and audience responses? Describe how you are going to achieve this. i.e. cross dissolves, graphic matches, effects etc
I incorporated a few transitions to help make the movie look better and have a better feel. I used some cross dissolves and other effects to make the movie have a happy feel to it.

Editing techniques
Have you created links between shots and throughout the film to emotionally engage the viewer with your story ( i.e. is your film tied together through theme, colour, story, objects etc?)
Not really. I have used bright shot types and happy music to create the feeling of sun, which is happy.  It is mainly the colour of my shots that have made the film feel happy like it is.

FIlm Language - Mise En Scene

 MISE EN SCENE
PUT IN SCENE
This is the combination of all the visual elements within the frame
(frame: the physical boundary that contains what the audience sees)

Raiders of the Lost Arc; discussion of Mise En Scene

Genre:
The genre of Raiders of the Arc is an action movie. You can tell its an action movie as the scene is really fast paced with fast shots. The setting is a dark mysterious place which shows its also an action. The main type of edits that are used in this movie are cuts. This makes the feeling of the action movie a lot more action. The shot types that are used are close-ups, then it jumps back to the wide shot to see the whole setting and whats going on around the place.

Style of Acting:
The actors have a strong type of acting. They seem strong and not scared of anything. The dirt they have on their faces and their ragged clothes kind of show they are adventure people.

Props:
There are little props that make the movie the way it is. The whip is a big part, along with the hat they wear to get the feeling that they are adventurous type people. The golden face that they collect is also a big part as it shows what they have come to achieve and shows that they are explorer type people to have gotten it. There are also cobwebs used to enhance the mood, it shows its a dark scary type of place to get the feeling of the action movie.

Lighting:
The main type of lighting that this scene uses is mainly dark lighting. The lighting on their faces at the start and the shadows on their faces, also the scene in general is shot pretty dark to create the mood of the action movie. The temperature is warm most of the time, but when they were walking into the cave the temperature was cool to make the feeling goose-bumpy and kind of scary.

Setting:
It is set in South-America. South-America is an amazon type place so its shot in the wilderness in the amazon.

Notting Hill; Discussion of Mise En Scene

Genre:
Romantic comedy

Shot types:
Close ups, to get the emotion and express of their face. to help the audience to connect with whats happening. Wide shots were also used to create an atmosphere and to see the setting. Also to show the relationship between the 2 characters. A big shot at the end with the birds eye view was to see the big picture saying "are we meant to be together forever?" they used the camera to create the metaphor.

Lighting:
the lighting that was used was like a warm temperature to create the mood of the scene. Then at the park is was like summers light moonlight and it was definitely cooled down to create that intimate feel, to emphasize the romantic feeling.

Style of acting:
They make themselves likable and shows how vulnerable we can be when in love. They also show their weaknesses. They were a number of different characters so they could connect with a lot of people. They are generally very down to earth with the way they act and they over think things.

Props:
The clothes have a big part in movies and the clothes that are worn in Notting Hill are usually stylish and fashionable to fit with the time.
The brownie was also used as a prop. it was given to the one who was the most pathetic. It enhances the scene of them getting to know each other by sharing the close secrets with each other.
The fence was another prop and it showed that she was stronger then him. She wanted to have some fun but he was a bit more quieter and he was a bit more shy and not as out there.
The wheelchair contirbuted to the story as well as it was trying to show she was a caring person even though she had a famous life she wanted to connect with his family and get to know them.
The bench in the park symbolised true love, it talked about the 2 people who had sit there together on that bench. Its a symbol of 2 people who experienced a life long love.

About Movie Shots

This shot of the queen has many types of shots incorporated within. One type of shot is over the shoulder shot. It is taken from the frogs perspective looking at the queen. There is also a medium to close-up shot with the low angle peering up, but it is more of a close-up as there is not much head room around the Queens face.
The intention of this shot is to create the feeling of isolation and fear. This shot is made for the Queen to make her look over-powering and dominating towards the frog.
There are many things that are used in this shot to convey the meaning needed. Her facial expressions are visual clue as to what kind of character she is. Her posture and the way she holds herself. Her make-up and props are also important with her make-up being extravagant. It creates a sense of fear. Her crown is smaller then her head, which is a symbol of how much she is in love with herself, she thinks shes too good. Its symbolic of how shes not a very good queen. The shot is dark and there is colour on the queen. This sends out the message that the palace is a dark and scary place.
The camera angle in this shot is low angle. This shows how high up he is which give us some perspective. This shot is also a long wide shot, to show the setting and how small he is in comparison. The intention of this shot was to emphasize the height of the cabinet. There are many clues which lead us to the idea of the story. First of all we see him on top of the cabinet getting ready to jump off. and we see that there is a window the the wall which we know that he will jump onto. He is wearing a white lab coat which suggests that he is a professor or from a mental institute. There is a poster in  the corner which says "loose talk is noose talk" which means he is going to hang himself. Therefore we make the assumption that he is from a mental institute trying to escape.

The shot type for this shot of the mad hatter is low angle and close-up. You can tell this because it's just focusing on his head. The mad hatter make-up really emphasise what type of person he is. THe gloomy background and his clothes also have a lot to do with this shot and show that he is a powerful person.

This shot of the man is a low-angle and medium shot. It is shot from under his face but doesn't take up the whole screen which shows its a medium shot. The background is simple which brings out the man in the shot and makes the camera focus on him. The lighting also has a big part in this shot as it is kind of dark which empahises the power he has over everyone and makes him seem like a kind of bad guy. The clothes he is wearing suggests that he is from an olden day era or is some kind of luietenant maybe. The font on the door in the background also suggests that it is shot in the olden days as it is a simple type of font.
